The Emmet Tornado Shelter was once a part of the former Emmet School System. When Emmet School merged with the Blevins School. Blevins School no longer needed the shelter. Therefore The City of Emmet Purchased the Shelter from the Blevins School District.
The shelter was only a few years old but was in terrible repair. The Shelter is above ground but is designed to provide shelter for up to 500 people (Standing) and resist up to 200 miles per hour winds.
The Shelter has a solid concrete floor sitting on deep piers, 12 inch solid concrete walls with a brick outer face. The ceiling is an 8 inch thick precast concrete slab with 3 inches of foam insulation covered with a rubber roof.
The Shelter has folding room dividers that can divide the building into (4) separate rooms. Normally the partitions are folded up, making it (1) a large room, except for (1) room used as Nevada County's Emergency Operations Center. The Shelter has (4) separate heat and air units with a natural gas-powered backup generator. It is equipped with all radios, (4) telephones, and (4) computers necessary to serve as the 911 Dispatch Center if the main Nevada County Dispatch Center is Compromised.
